Spur of the Moment

Sometimes we'll jump in the car (or head out on foot) on a whim and go exploring. It doesn't happen as often as we'd like, but it does happen.

Today was one of those days. We've been learning a little bit about art and needed to make a landscape drawing.

So we hopped on over to a local fishing spot at Falls Lake. This is not a state park and there was litter everywhere (so sad). But the view was gorgeous and the weather could not have been any more perfect.

We were also able to do some tracking.

Then Jeremiah and I drew our names in the sand. (Neither one of us has the attention span to sit outside and draw a landscape).

Picturing America

This summer as an "elective" we are going to do the study Picturing America.

I entered to get the curriculum for free and it is amazing! So much more than I expected.

This is the box:

This is what the paintings look like:

There are several heavily laminated prints (front and back) in the kit along with a teacher guide. I've been wanting to study art for a while and this will combine it with American History. Each print is an American treasure. We are going to have fun!

Painting T-Shirts

We painted on pictures of Lions using RIT Dye. The kids drew traced the lions onto the t-shirts with fabric markers and then brushed on the dye with paint brushes. It had a really cool effect. They did use paint for the eyes and tongues.

We are going to the Zoo with this family on Monday and all the kids will wear their shirts. They are excited!

Rainy Day Art

It was a yucky rainy day and the boys were driving me insane. So I sent them down to the sunroom with these kits I bought them for Christmas. Basically they are just wood kits that you paint and glue together. They made a tank, a jet, and a race car.

For my reward I got 2 solid hours of peace and relative quiet. They shared paint, made jokes, laughed, and really (for boys) kept the mess down to a minimum. It was fantastic!!!

I'm going shopping this week, to stock up on a supply of rainy day crafts. For my own sanity of course.
